Back in August 2020, these two combatants clashed in the co-main event of UFC 252. Initially, 'Suga' asserted dominance within the octagon, only to meet defeat by technical knockout at 4:40 of the first round, exiting the arena on a stretcher due to an ankle injury.
These two first went at it at UFC 252 in August 2020, when Vera defeated O’Malley by TKO, O’Malley’s first, and so far only defeat in his career.
Since then, O’Malley has become one of the top draws in the promotion, beating Aljamain Sterling in 51 seconds to claim the Bantamweight belt at UFC 292, the first championship victory in O’Malley’s career. The Helena, Montana native is 17-1 with one no-contest, with 12 wins coming by knockout.
Despite being with the UFC since 2014, this is Vera’ first shot at a title. The 31-year-old earned this opportunity by winning five of his last six fights, most recently beating Pedro Munhoz by unanimous decision at UFC 292. The Ecuador native comes into Saturday with a 23-8-1 record, with 18 wins coming by knockout or decision.
Another notable fight on the card will see fan-favorite Dustin Poirier take on Benoit Saint Denis. A win over Poirier will put him one step closer to a title shot against Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev.
It's almost fight night once again in Miami. After returning to south Florida last year with a massive PPV event, UFC is back in the Magic City for UFC 299 on Saturday. Bantamweight champion Sean O'Malley looks to make the first defense of his title against an old rival in Marlon "Chito" Vera from the Kaesya Center.
O'Malley has been flying through the 135-pound division to start his career and it culminated with a vicious knockout of Aljamain Sterling to capture the title last August. However, many have criticized his resume as he has not faced many top contenders to earn his status. He owns wins over Sterling, former champ Petr Yan, Raulian Paiva, Kris Moutinho and Thomas Almeida since 2020. He also suffered a TKO loss to Vera in 2020, but it's a loss that O'Malley tries to dispute.
Vera has run up a 5-2 record since defeating O'Malley. His most recent win was a decision over Pedro Munhoz on the undercard of O'Malley's win over Sterling. The win over Munhoz was a rebound victory for Vera, who was coming off a split decision loss to Cory Sandhagen.
The pair are facing off for the second time after encountering each other at UFC 252 the better part of four years ago when the American suffered the indignity of a first-round TKO loss to his Ecuadorian rival.
But now, with the shoe on the other foot, O'Malley hopes to ensure he keeps his crown for another fight and can pay Vera back in kind when the pair step into the octagon once again. The ex-The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America contestant won't go down without a fight, however, setting the stage for what could be one of the most thrilling encounters seen on a UFC card in some time.
Sean O'Malley and Marlon Vera face off with contrasting professional records across the board, with a combined 51 matches, 40 wins, nine losses, one draw, and one no-contest result.
O'Malley boasts the more impressive 17-1 (1) record of the two, having won all but two matches to date. His only professional career loss came against Vera in 2020, though his bout with Pedro Munhoz at UFC 276 was called a no-contest after an accidental eye poke.
Meanwhile, Vera holds a 23-8-1 record but has only won eight fights by knockout. A five-time Performance of the Night winner, his victory over O'Malley remains a feather in his cap to date, and he'll have high hopes of a second triumph.
Sean O'Malley last fought in August 2023, when he defeated Aljamain Sterling at UFC 292 in Boston to claim the UFC Bantamweight Championship.
He later won the Performance of the Year award for his efforts. Marlon Vera previously fought at the same UFC 292 event when he squared off with Pedro Munhoz. The Ecuadorian scored a unanimous decision after going the distance over five rounds.
The event is in Miami, the perfect setting for O’Malley’s loud and colorful personality. O'Malley impressed while on Dana White's Contender Series in 2017. Since then, he has become a one-man highlight reel, landing massive knockout wins while showboating. A controversial win against Petr Yan brought him a world title opportunity and he beat Aljamain Sterling in August to win gold.

Rematches are always interesting in MMA. It's always hard to gauge just how much the first fight matters. Sometimes it's a precedent that simply can't be broken. Other times it isn't of much use. O'Malley was just getting started when Vera chopped his legs down to set up a first-round finish. He also injured his calf early in the fight. That's not to take anything away from Vera. He's a veteran of the game who has earned this shot.
